And What is "Old Catholicism"
A Brief Abstract
The original "Old Catholics " belonged to the Ultrajectine Rite named for a geographic region in Holland. They sometimes were referred to as the "Dutch Catholic Church". It had its beginning as a part of the Ancient Roman Catholic Church of the Netherlands with its Holy See in Utrecht. Because of political tensions and unresolved issues with Rome, the 18th century Dutch Roman Catholic bishops with full and valid apostolic lines, declared their independence and subsequently continued as a separated Catholic Church. At that time they were referred to as the "Old Roman Catholics" of Utrecht.
With the spread of "Old Catholicism" down through the next centuries, the denomination name "Old Roman Catholic" or just "Old Catholic" is still used today though out the world. In some European countries it remains the third largest Christian denomination next to Roman Catholic and Lutheran. The "Old-Catholic" Union of Utrecht and the Episcopal Church of Europe signed an intercommunion agreement in Bonn Germany in 1934. The current Metropolitan of Utrecht ("Old Catholic" mother church) is Archbishop Bernd Wallet.
In 1914 England's "Old Catholic" Archbishop Arnold Harris Matthew consecrated Bishop de Landas Berghes to establish the first "Old-Catholic" episcopal jurisdiction in the United States.
